This is an interview that John Brodigan did with me for Scoops, part of a biography section on all of the Scoops staff members. Since they haven't put it up yet, I've chosen to make use of the material here. All of the HTML tags were put in here by me when I submitted the finished questionnaire to John.
What makes you the "Webmaster of Extreme"?
The nickname came about a fan named Tim Scott that posted stuff on a regular basis on the message board at Francine Fournier's homepage. He said something to the effect of that since Ms. Fournier was the Queen Of Extreme and I was her webmaster, then that made me the Webmaster Of Extreme. It thought it was a cute idea, so I started using the nickname and it stuck. Also, I've been shooting from the heart in all my writing, on and off the Internet, so it was very appropriate.
What first got you involved with the Internet Wrestling scene?I was involved with the first couple of issues of the Sharpshooter Newsletter when it came out in March of 1997, but I wanted to go in a more uncensored direction so I started my own newsletter, The Outsider Edge, a couple of weeks afterward, and I did that newsletter for over two years and the related website until this summer when I put it on hiatus. So in other words, it's all Conrad Thompson's fault. (laugh)
Where else have you written besides Scoops?Besides the Sharpshooter and my own newsletter, I've written for Iwrestling.com, HadesWrestling.com, Wrestling-News.com, the Chokeslam Newsletter, PWD Online, The Bagpipe Report, Dual Monarchy, and a couple of other little sites that syndicated my column for awhile. Iwrestling.com was my first mass exposure of sorts in early 1998, and was one of my favorite places to work for. The Bagpipe Report was bigger exposure but was also my least favorite place to write because I was locked into an exclusive oral agreement at the time, but the powers-that-be there were chopping up my columns so badly that I hardly recognized them, so I quit after six months and became syndicated. Outside of wrestling, I wrote for a couple of different punk fanzines in the late 80's, including one out of Pittsburgh that was called Compilation Of Confusion, and I'm working on two different books right now. I also had a letter dissing Korn printed in Guitar World magazine this past February, if that counts! :)
How long have you been a fan of wrestling?I was a fan since the early 80's about a year or so, and being from Northeast PA, saw WWF wrestling almost exclusively on the local CBS affiliate. In my hometown of Hazleton, PA, the WWF used to hold house shows about every six weeks or so at St. Joe's Gym, and the first one I went to was with my grandfather, who was a huge mark for the sport. He passed away in 1988, so we will never know what he would have thought of the nWo or about the fact that his grandson founded a homepage for one of the biggest heel managers in ECW!
Eventually everyone shuts off their computer and has a life. What's yours like?Even when the computer's off, I end up getting asked about wrestling by fellow employees at the office and by friends on the street. And having a Palm Pilot and web phone in my possession doesn't help, I gather! (laughs) But in all seriousness, since my girlfriend, "The True Head Cheerleader & Queen Of Extreme" Frances Prokop, has been a big part of it lately, I consider my life to be blessed. I also read, play several different instruments, go to concerts, buy way too many CD's (I have at least a couple thousand), and sleep.
Who are some of the wrestlers you enjoy watching?
I enjoy watching ECW, period. I also like a lot of what the WWF does, and whatever Japanese tapes I can get a hold of. I don't have any specific favorite wrestlers at the moment, but I loved seeing the Dreamer/Raven tag team, and I'm an admitted huge mark for Chyna.
What's been your highlight as a reporter so far?Getting to finally make a pilgrimage to Mecca (the ECW Arena) at Cyberslam 2000 and witnessing wrestling history change overnight.
As a fan?Finding out that Jazz has better taste in music than Francine! (Jazz complimented me on the TLC shirt that I wore to the Q&A session at Cyberslam and expressed her admiration for Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins to me.) Also, making Chris Candido and Tammy Lynn Sytch laugh at a sign I had brought to the November 1999 house show in Wilkes-Barre. The sign said, "Oh my God! Tammy Lynn killed Francine's Furby!" If you ever see the RF Video FanCam tape of that show, you'll see both the sign and their reaction to it. (If you see this, Chris and Tammy, I still have that sign!)
Who are some of your writing influences? My main influence as a wrestling writer is Lady Miss Carrie. I was a fan of her writing, always liked the fact that she would shoot in her columns, both about wrestling and her personal life. We ended up becoming friends, mostly because she and I had a mutual lust for Marlena at the time! SamJerry and Douglas Mellott, who are two friends of mine who also write online, are also to blame for some of my approach in other ways, as IM and e-mail conversations that I'll have with them often end up being inspiration for each other's columns! Jello Biafra and George Carlin also influence me as a writer.
Hulk Hogan vs. Vince Russo, work or shoot?Shoot both of those motherfuckers so that we can all get back to work.
Do you have any thoughts on the Parental Television Council?Leni Riefenstahl(*) should direct their commercials. That is, if she isn't busy already with the Bush/Cheney campaign.
What's your favorite match? It isn't really a match, but it was what got me into ECW. It was the famous House Party '96 spot where Tommy Dreamer cracked Raven in the skull with a disguised stop sign that the original sign guy handed him at ringside. I was hooked right then and there because it was so unexpected and hilarious!
Do you write anything outside of wrestling?I'm working on two different books, and I'm also trying to get back into songwriting! The music tends to come easier than the lyrics for me.
Which is your favorite fed as of this interview?ECW.
What are your five desert island discs? (i.e., five CD's you'd bring on a deserted island)Realistically, I'd need five Case Logic folders to carry all my crucial music with me to a desert island. But restricted to five choices, I'd bring Fan Mail by TLC, Fear Of A Black Planet by Public Enemy, The Complete Beethoven Symphonies by Herbert von Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic (on the Deutsche Grammophon label), I Bificus by Bif Naked, and The Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan.
Favorite TV show, outside of wrestling?M*A*S*H, Living Single, and The Screen Savers.
Favorite Movie?Immortal Beloved, A Hard Day's Night, Amadeus, and Mo'Better Blues.
Favorite Book? The Autobiography Of Malcolm X.
How do you feel about the Internet Wrestling scene?I like most of the major wrestling sites and the ones that concentrate on news, and despise all the sites that are aimed at what I call in my column "T&A marks".
What are your career goals?I would love to make writing my career. Time will tell.
If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?Get everything in writing.
