After two weeks of voting, the results are in, you made your voice heard, and as promised, here are the results for the inaugural Breaking Kayfabe Reader's Awards. We got a very nice turnout for the awards, at least in my opinion, and most of the choices turned out to be very surprising.
Role Model Of The Year. Here, we asked you to choose who made the most inspirational impact in the year 2000. In the Editor's Choice Awards, Mick Foley earned the trophy with 40% of the vote. Your results:
Mick Foley took the Readers Poll Award to match his Editor's Choice Award, with 61% of the vote. The runners up:
Booker T 14%
Chyna 6%
Chris Benoit 4%
Ralph Nader 4%
Lita 3%
Tommy Dreamer 2%
The Rock 2%
Rob Van Dam 1%
Spike Dudley 0%
Asshole Of The Year. The exact opposite of Role Model Of The Year, this person or persons made the most negative impact last year. PTC/MRC self-appointed moral guardian L. Brent Bozell earned the award from our Editor's Circle with 40% of the vote.
The Reader's Poll Award goes to: L. Brent Bozell, who took 29% of the vote, considering the stiff competition he had in this category:
Vince Russo 20%
Al Gore & Joseph Lieberman 14%
Phil Mushnick 13%
George W. Bush & Dick Cheney 10%
Scott Steiner 8%
Triple H 2%
Rikishi 2%
Justin Credible 0%
Wrestler Of The Year. A self-explanatory category. If they ruled the ring in 2000, they should earn this award. The Editor's Panel voted Hunter Hearst Helmsley as the top man in this category, while the Readers voted in…
Hunter Hearst Helmsley with an overwhelming 77% of the vote. Not very surprising, as pretty much every major site agrees that 2000 was Helmsley's year. His vanquished opponents, in descending order:
The Rock 9%
Chris Benoit 6%
Steve Corino 2%
Chris Benoit 2%
Booker T 2%
Rhino 1%
Lita 1%
Chyna 1%
Mick Foley 0%
Tommy Dreamer 0%
Undertaker 0%
Tag Team Of The Year. Take your Wrestler Of The Year qualifications, multiply them by two, and you get this category. All of the wrestlers here had memorable matches last year, while all-star team of editors picked Matt & Jeff Hardy to take the Editors' Award.
The Readers chose: Edge & Christian. 57% of the readers picked these Canadian kooks to take the award - I'm sure E & C will consider the win to be awesomenatious or something similar.
The runners up:
Matt & Jeff Hardy: 25%
Buh Buh Ray & D-Von Dudley 10%
Mikey Whipwreck & Yoshihiro Tajiri 4%
Tommy Dreamer & Raven 3%
Danny Doring & Amish Roadkill 1%
Manager Of The Year. The perfect manager in wrestling had to both be able to stand out as his own character and as part of the team with his/her wrestlers, rather than just stand in the corner and do nothing. The Sinister Minister took the Editor's Poll in a landslide with 60% of the vote.
The Readers chose: The Sinister Minster! The Good Padre ran neck in neck with Lita and Steven Richards for the entire two weeks that the poll took place, but came out on top with 36% of the vote. Right behind the Minister were:
Lita 30%
Steven Richards 26%
Bill Alfonso 3%
Cyrus The Virus 35%
Elektra 1%
Now, here's where we look at the seedier side of things… you've been warned!
Worst Wrestler Of The Year. Candidates for this award were what Jim Cornette would call "the shits". The all-star group of editors and the readers apparently agreed, having given Tank Abbott 49% of the vote in the readers poll, compared to 70% in the editor's poll.
The runners-up, or in this case, wrestlers who proved in the eyes of the readers to be better than Abbott, are:
Marc Henry 16%
The Big Show 14%
Val Venis 8%
Justin Credible 7%
Trish Stratus 4%
Mike Awesome 3%
Worst Tag Team Of The Year. Either they were a bad pairing, or should have remained single wrestlers, or should have stayed out of the ring. No matter how you slice it, they stunk. Our all-star panel agreed that Insane Clown Posse should stick to music. Our readers, on the other hand, felt that…
Insane Clown Posse should really stick to music, as 54% of them voted that Violent J & Shaggy 2 Dope should stay out of the ring. No verification as of yet that Slim Anus tried to spam this particular poll.
Bringing up the rear in this category:
The Goodfather & Bull Buchanan 23%
3 Count 15%
EZ Money & Julio Dinero 8%
Worst Manager Of The Year. To qualify for this award, the candidates would have served their wrestlers better by staying at home. Filling a much needed void in the eyes of our Editors were XPW's Rob Black and WCW's Major Gunns, who tied for "worst" in this category.
The readers voted thumbs down on: Major Gunns, with an overwhelming 53% of the vote. Sorry, Tylene, but silicone isn't everything.
Running "ahead" of her:
Rob Black 16%
Jack Victory 16%
Francine Fournier 15%
Best Promo/Interview. These candidates had the best mic skills, and therefore, the most consistently entertaining promos and interviews in 2000. The Editor's Panel chose The Sinister Minister, while the readers voted favorably for:
The Rock, who still seems to get over with 34% of the readers polled. Right behind him in the eyes of our readers are:
Triple H 27%
Chris Jericho 19%
The Sinister Minister 10%
Mick Foley 8%
Rhino 2%
Worst Promo/Interview. These candidates, compared to our Best Promo nominees, were poster children for mute buttons, laryngitis, and remote controls. Our Editors hollered "Scott Steiner sucks on the mic!", while the readers heard them and felt that there was someone even worse than Big Poppa Dump on the stick:
Vince Russo apparently got the finger from 36% of our readers when it comes to mic skills or lack thereof.
Scott Steiner came in second with 21%, and right behind him were:
Justin Credible 15%
Francine Fournier 9%
Ernest Miller 9%
Steven Richards 9%
Best Extra-Curricular Activity. The wrestler in this category got mainstream attention with their outside activities. Our Editors chose Mick Foley's second career as a best-selling author as the best of the bunch. So did our readers, 49% of whom approved of Mick's literary efforts Have A Nice Day! and Christmas Chaos.
The runners-up were:
Chyna - Playboy model 23%
Diamond Dallas Page - literacy advocate 9%
Chris Jericho - rock singer 9%
The Rock & Chyna - voter registration advocates 8%
Tommy Dreamer - video game consultant 3%
Jerry Lawler - illustrator 0%
Best Wrestling Announcer. These commentators could probably sound good reading the phone book. The Editor's Panel voted Jim Ross as the best, while the readers gave the award to:
Jim Ross! 50% of our readers chose Good Old J.R.
The runners-up:
Joey Styles 17%
Jerry Lawler 17%
Tazz 11%
Joel Gertner 3%
Bobby Heenan 3%
Michael Cole 0%
Worst Wrestling Announcer. With the worst promo/interview categories, at least you only have to hear them for a few minutes. With these poor buggers, you're stuck with them for two to three hours if the mute button on your remote doesn't work! The all-stars on our panel gave the award to Mark Madden as a going-away present following his firing from WCW, while our readers gave the award to:
Tony Schiavone, who 41% of our readers apparently feel that Violent J should have really stabbed him, preferably in the larynx (see "Still Stabbin'" on the
Bizarr/Bizaar album.) "Better" than Schiavone in the eyes of the readers:
Mark Madden 36% (Second to Tony is still terrible)
Stevie Ray 12% (Is this how many feminists voted?)
Kevin Kelly 7% (Bet he'd rather be called a hermaphrodite by The Rock)
Michael Cole 4%
Chris Cruise 0%
Best Program. This category was curious as to what show you dared not miss last year. Our Editors Panel voted WWF Raw Is War as Must-See TV.
The readers agreed, giving WWF Raw Is War 68% of their votes. Running behind: WCW Monday Nitro 18% ECW On TNN 7% WWF Smackdown 6% ECW Hardcore TV 1% WCW Thunder 0%
On the other hand, in our last category, the Worst Program category went to the program readers wouldn't miss even if it was cancelled. The Editors gave a ceremonial middle finger to WCW Thunder, while the readers were a little more divided, giving 46% of their thumbs down to WCW Thunder, and 26% to WCW Monday Nitro.
The supporting cast of stinkers:
WWF Raw Is War 12%
ECW On TNN 6%
WWF Smackdown 6%
ECW Hardcore TV 4%
And in the "final categories", Best Promotion and Worst Promotion, well, we erred and failed to put up polls for those categories in the readers poll - something we didn't realize until it was too late. But if the Readers Poll results compared to the Editors' Panel are any indication, The WWF got the Best Promotion spot from the Editors while WCW got the Worst Promotion award. I highly doubt that the readers will disagree. We shall see what happens in the weeks and months to come. See you later this week with another article.
